About This Weather Station
The weather data is provided by a Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather station. The sensor suite includes rain collector, temperature and humidity sensors and an anemometer - the temperature and humidity sensors are enclosed in a radiation shield to ensure accuracy. The data is collected every 2.5 secs (rainfall and wind) - the live data on the Home page and the Graphs are updated every 10 secs, the stats data every 10 minutes. The data is collated and displayed using (NZ produced) Weather Display software.
About Golden Bay
Golden Bay, at the northwest corner of the South Island, New Zealand, and just under two hours northwest of Nelson, is a coastal area bordered by the ranges of Kahurangi National Park and Abel Tasman National Park. It is largely separated from the rest of the island by steep hill country and the only road into the area traverses a steep, winding pass between the Riwaka and Takaka River valleys.
The population of approximately 4,000 triples over summer with an influx of visitors who enjoy its natural beauty, recreational opportunities and laid back culture. The golden sands, clear waters, rocky headlands and lush native forest are all part of Golden Bay's charm. The region is made for outdoor adventure, with hiking and sea kayaking in Abel Tasman National Park and tramping in the Kahurangi National Park - with the adventurous going as far as the West Coast on the Heaphy Track (50 miles).
PuPu Springs
Golden Bay's popularity also stems in part from its remoteness and its internationally significant conservation areas, such as Farewell Spit (a 24 km long sandspit with wetlands and a bird sanctuary) and Te Waikoropupu Springs (the largest freshwater springs in the Southern Hemisphere). It is also noted for its extensive cave systems. Currently, the Bay's main income is generated by dairy farming, arts and crafts, and tourism.
Takaka is the main business and shopping area and is located at the southern end of the Bay. Collingwood is the second biggest town and was once (during the gold rushes) a candidate for the site of the nation's capital though today it mainly acts as a farming and tourist service hub.
